DAY 5 @ The Big Island, Hawai’i

Today was another awesome day!

Kekaha Kai State Beach

We decided to go swimming and snorkeling at another state park, since we had such great luck before. We followed the beach to a small cove, and we were the only ones there… if you don’t count the many sea turtles! We snorkeled around them, trying to give them a respectful amount of space, but they swam right up to us! We also saw several funny little sea cucumbers here.

Monk Seals | Marine Mammal Center

Walking back, we spotted a sleeping monk seal! There was a staff member from the Marine Mammal Center who was watching over her, and he informed us that we were incredibly lucky because the Hawaiian monk seal is one of the rarest species in the world. There are only 8-10 monk seals around the island, and they suspected this one was pregnant!

He said that any time a monk seal comes up on public shoreline like this, a member from the center is dispatched to guard him/her. I was shocked to learn this is because people will throw rocks at them or worse if they are left unattended.

Hard to top that one, but we also found a place that makes gluten-free Japanese fried chicken, yummm!

I was pretty excited, this was my first fried chicken in over three and a half years. And it was excellent!
