We had originally planned to spend the day hiking, but my injured toe made this not so enticing.

Instead, we decided to explore the island by doing some geocaching! The geocaches were tucked away in spots we never would’ve visited otherwise, and it was a wonderful relaxing day.

The geocaching took us up a short but very steep road to the Henry Opukaha’ia Memorial Chapel, built to honor the first Hawaiian to convert to Christianity. The chapel was uniquely constructed of local lava rock, and surrounded by a small cemetery.
We saw another cache located at Punalu’u Black Sand Beach Park, and couldn’t pass that one up! Although it wasn’t a great beach for either swimming or snorkeling, it was incredibly beautiful. The black color comes from basalt, and it’s the most accessible black sand beach on the island.
